COMD 321 Analysis of Moving Image

This course introduces students to basic grammar of cinematic language, which has become the basis for making meaning in a variety of visual media. Topics to be covered include mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound-image relationships, narrative forms, and non-narrative forms (documentary and experimental). Attention is given to both dominant practices (e.g., Classical Hollywood Cinema) and alternatives. Attention is also paid to how and why different media (cinema, video, broadcast television) make different uses of this shared grammar. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 6, Prerequisite: COMD 204.
