HISTR 201 History of Turkish Republic I

This course covers the nature and identity of the Ottoman Empire and its many legacies to the Republic such as modernization and intellectual movements. The focus is on the place of the Empire in international politics and its efforts to integrate with the European state system and public law from the early 19th century to World War I; why the Ottomans chose to join WWI; Turkey's War of Independence and formation of the Republic.
